Avalanche Education for Snowmobiling
Powder Addiction is offering avalanche classes for snowmobilers. Classes will be held at the Powder Addiction offices in the Village at Winter Park. Field sessions will take place in the Rollins Pass area. We will offer three levels of classes this year.

Intro: January 7th & 8th
        Thursday 6pm – 9pm
        Friday    8am-4pm

Intro: January 29th & 30th
        Friday 6pm – 9pm
        Saturday 8am – 4pm

Level 1: February 19th – 21st
        Friday 5:30pm – 9:30pm
        Saturday 8am – 4:30pm
        Sunday 8am – 4:30pm

Level 1: March 19th – 21st

Free Avalanche Awareness Clinics 

 Classroom session

Topics include: avalanche statistics, human factors, terrain, terminology, snowpack, weather factors, obvious red flags, avalanche reports, travel protocols, companion recovery

Introduction to Avalanches with Field Session and Companion Rescue     $150

3 hour classroom session and a full day field session.


Topics include: avalanche statistics, human factors, terrain and traps, terminology, snowpack layering, weather factors, obvious clues and red flags, avalanche reports, travel protocols, route selection, companion recovery, beacon use, probing, shoveling, rescue scenario

 GCSAR

Level 1 Fundamentals of Avalanche Safety     $300

4 hour classroom session and two full day field sessions

Topics include:
Avalanche Types and Anatomy
Basic Slab Mechanics
Terrain - evaluation and route selection, travel protocols and group communication
Snowpack and Weather – snowpack development, field observations, introduction to snow pits, and pit tools, climate zones
Decision making tools – human factors, systematic decision making, avalanche bulletins
Rescue – companion rescue, scene size up, organization, beacon use, probing, shoveling, victim rescue with out beacon, single and multiple burial search techniques, mistakes, emergency response roles
Critique – recommendations for further skill development

 Students who attend and complete a field session will receive a certificate of completion.

Participants for all field sessions must have appropriate gear for a day snowmobiling in the backcountry. Beacon, shovel and probe required.


Avalanche Safety equipment rentals:

Barryvox Pulse Beacon   $20 per day
Shovel                                 $5 per day
Probe                                   $5 per day
Package                              $25 per day

Guided Backcountry Skiing and Riding         $150 per person

Earn your turns on a one day guided backcountry adventure. Each tour will get some great hiking followed by some great skiing. The more motivated you are the more turns you can get. Essential backcountry skills will be taught and the day can be catered to our client’s desires. Two person minimum. Call for more details.
